The Smith and Sons Franklin Franchise is owned and operated by Lane & Melissa van den Brink. Lane and Melissa have owned the Smith and Sons Franklin area since 2012. Lane has been in the building industry since 2002 and has been in business since 2010. Lane registered as a Licensed Building Practitioner in 2010. Lane enjoys the challenge of turning a client’s renovation vision into a reality with an eye for the little things in detail and design. Lane takes pride in being able to translate a client’s brief into a practical and cost-effective solution that also looks great. Our commitment is to have great communication, professionalism, quality systems and excellent workmanship to make your renovation process as stress-free as possible. One of the ways we can complete this is using the Smith and Sons Design, Plan and Construct process this gives everyone involved in a project the confidence that they know where they are and what is happening at each stage. It removes a lot of the stress not only throughout the construction phase but also those earlier stages that can come with renovating. With both Lane and Melissa being raised here in the Franklin region, they are proud to support the local business community and will use local sub-contractors where possible.

    Managing Director

    Lane has been in the building industry since 2002 and completed his apprenticeship in 2007. He’s a Licensed Building Practitioner and has been a business owner since 2010.

    He enjoys meeting people and working along aside his great crew. He finds having such a positive team of problem solvers makes the day go easier and ensures they’ll always come up with the right solutions for clients.

    Lane has always lived in the Franklin area. He and his wife Melissa have three children. When he gets a chance he also enjoys cars, paddle boarding and building.

    General Manager

    Melissa has more than 10 years’ experience as an Administrator. She previously worked at RD1 and Carters -giving her a solid understanding of the rural and building sectors. Since 2013 she has managed the office for Smith & Sons Franklin.

    Melissa particularly likes dealing with clients and meeting people. With a solid team and great clients she finds getting things done can still be plenty of fun.

    Although born in Invercargill, Melissa moved up to the Franklin Region when she was young and has lived here ever since. As a busy mum to three young children Melissa likes to spend time with family and friends. When she has a spare minute she also enjoys sports, shopping and getting in the garden.

    Lance has been our lead Project Manager since 2016 and has progressed into our Division Manager where he focuses on bringing clients visions to reality. He was brought up in Auckland and now lives in Pukekohe with his wife and two children. He enjoys spending time with his family and participating in a few local community sports teams.

Nicky brings a fresh approach and lots of enthusiasm to her role. She enjoys the tight knit office culture and helping clients.

    Project Manager

    Tom is a qualified builder that joined our team in 2021. He was our head builder for 2 years then progressed into the Project Manager role. Tom is organised and concentrates on having great communication with the clients and trades. His building knowledge is a massive bonus to help projects run fluently. In his free time, he enjoys playing squash and spending quality time with his family.

    John does our deliveries and makes sure all sites are operating under the correct health and safety standards. He joined our team in 2014 and his practical nature has been a real asset.

    During his career he’s worked in a number of roles in the construction and manufacturing industries. With experience as a mechanic, dairy farmer, driver and in the water industry he really enjoys the variety in his role with us.

    Another of our team to be born and bred in Franklin, John is married with two adult children. Away from work he enjoys travelling, catching up with family and friends, surfing, rugby and getting out on his lifestyle block.

    Construction

    Alex is a qualified Builder that joined the Smith & Sons Franklin team at the start of 2023. Alex has 18 years experience in the building industry, he started in commercial and has been building residential for the last 13 years. He strives to consistently produce quality workmanship and is passionate about the work he does, not minding the early mornings involved with building either. He likes to spend the majority of his time outdoors hunting and watching his kids play sports on the weekend.

    Apprentice

    Dylan joined the Smith & Sons Franklin team in 2021 and is currently completing his carpentry apprenticeship. Since becoming a part of the team he has shown great willingness to learn, is hard working and produces quality workmanship. Dylan is very familiar with the Franklin area as he grew up here. Dylan likes to play rugby and in his spare time he likes to go four wheel driving and camping on the weekends.
